Offered for auction is an improved design 45º-135º crossover in black for American Flyer S gauge trains. This is not an original American Flyer crossover, nor is it a reproduction of any known Gilbert accessory. This is trademarked TM AFF.This improved design 45º-135º crossover is a second version of this crossover that I made and sold a few years ago. Because of comments about the long dead spot on the earlier version, I spent over a year to make this new design with an electrified rail in the center section. This crossover is intended to generally look like what Gilbert would have made if it had ever done so. It is made using black resin (picture 2). I made it with raised ties and track guides just like the original crossover. The center “frog” is basically the same design as the original but instead of 90º it is angled at 45º and 135º and it has the hot rail inserted along each side. There are two additional significant differences from the original: the track is held by crimped copper wire rather than the flat steel hold-downs; and I did not drill holes for screwing or nailing to the table. You can see in the picture of the bottom (picture 4 ) I soldered wires between the copper wire hold-downs. This is not a precision injection molded production item. The prototype was finished with basically hand tools. Then I made a silicon rubber mold from the prototype and I am now hand casting parts from that mold and assembling the crossovers by hand. While it is well made and much better than the earlier version, it is still not perfect. You can see finishing and sanding marks along with the inevitable small bubbles (picture 3). Even with the hot rail in the center of each side of the frog it still has longer dead spots than the regular 90º crossover. This improved design 45º and 135º crossover works reasonably well depending on your locomotive’s contacts wheelbase or spacing, and their condition, and is much better than the earlier version. Because of the natural variation in the height of the Flyer track, it may take a little finesse to smooth the operation. This is intended for the operator, since it is not a collectable made by Gilbert. It can be used in a figure 8 (picture 5 ) with 10 curves and 1 half-curve with partial straights on each side. Look at the picture(s) carefully to verify you are comfortable with bidding on this crossover; this is not normal Flyer stuff. Questions are encouraged. Please e-mail me with questions or concerns.
