HOWARD, INC., LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA, 1989 OUT-OF-PRINT BOOK This wonderful, limited edition, First Edition book is signed by the author . The book constitutes an excellent history of the 45 th Virginia Infantry Regiment, including a complete, detailed and comprehensive history of the command as well as biographical narratives of some of its leaders. The book includes wonderful maps, detailed descriptions of battles and campaigns, specifics of individual soldiers in the command, unit rosters and wonderful maps, illustrations and photographs. The book contains unit rosters with service records of individual soldiers. The 45 th Virginia Infantry: In May 1861 men from Tazewell, Wythe, Carroll, Grayson and Bland Counties gathered in Wytheville to form the 45 the Virginia Infantry. Less than two months later the 45 th Virginia moved with troops under General John B. Floyd to the Kanawha Valley where the regiment was engaged with Federal troops in and around the areas of Carnifex Ferry and Fayetteville. During the spring and summer of 1862 the 45 th Virginia defended the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad. In that capacity the regiment fought at Giles Court House and Lewisburg. By September the 45 th Virginia was marched back along the Kanawah River toward Charleston, where it remained several weeks before being force to withdraw back to a camp around Dublin Depot. The regiment saw little further military action until August of 1863, when it was ordered to intercept Union General William W. Averell as he approached Lewisburg. The troops of the 45 th repulsed eight separate attacks at White Sulphur Springs and won praise from their commanders. Lieutenant Colonel Edwin H. Harman wrote that the “old 45 th ” walked into the action “fighting like demons.” Afterward the regiment was sent to East Tennessee and then to the defense of the salt mines at Saltville. The regiment suffered terrible losses at Cloyd’s Farm in May 1864 and again at Piedmont in June. The ranks of the regiment were reduced by nearly 60% in a one-month period. The regiment joined with the troops of Jubal Early. After marching to the outskirts of Washington, D.C., Early returned to the Shenandoah Valley, where he waged a determined campaign against a Union army three times his size. After a summer-long campaign that included major battles at Kernstown, Winchester, Fisher’s Hill, and Cedar Creek, Early’s army was greatly reduced in number. Many of Early’s troops were captured at Waynesboro in March of 1865. The handful of men who then comprised the 45 th Virginia boarded railcars for Southwest Virginia. The 45 th Virginia disbanded in Christiansburg on April 12, 1865. THIS BOOK IS IN MINT CONDITION This limited edition, First Edition book is signed by the author.
