SCOUT: Issues 1 through 24 COMPLETE: In Tim Truman’s futuristic Western, Scout is an Apache summoned by the supernatural Gahn to defeat four monsters who are currently in positions of power in the USA (including the presidency). Forewarned by Scout’s killing of the first monster, the President sends two of Scout’s army-training friends (Rosanna Winter and Raymond Vaughan) to kill him. Operating in a world of ecological disaster and social disintegration, Scout has killed the monsters by the end of #6. He goes on to become a rallying point for the hungry and discontented people, accompanied by a spiritual leader, Doody, whose bible is The Lord of the Rings. By #14, Doody is dead and Scout has been wounded and captured by Winter, but her allegiances have been shaken by contact with an Israeli secret agent who tells her about the real effects of the U.S. policies she’s supporting. Teamed up with Monday the Eliminator (after they’ve fought each other through the 3-D Special, issue #16), Scout winds up in the middle of a global war (#20–24). Notable backups include Fashion In Action (#1–8) and “Monday the Eliminator” (#11–14, before becoming part of the main story-line). This four-issue mini-series is the work of writer Chuck Dixon (Nightwing, Birds of Prey) and artist Ben Dunn (Ninja High School), and it’s a thrill-a-minute. From Eclipse 1987-88 SCOUT – NEW AMERICA: Issues 1, 2, 3, 4 of 4 COMPLETE: This 1987–1988 mini-series continues the post-apocalyptic saga of the Western U.S., first told in Scout. New America centers around Army Ranger Rosa Winter, a hero from the war in which Mexico invaded the southwestern United States. With national borders changed and political alignments in constant shift, Rosa is called upon to help build a new America. Her first mission takes her to Baja, Mexico where Japanese business interests are busy trying to buy the entire area from the Communist government of Mexico. Working with a local priest, Rosa must unite the people of Baja to stop this transaction, and begin a war to liberate Mexico from its Communist leaders. Like the original Scout series, New America features striking art by Timothy Truman. From Eclipse 1987-88 SCOUT – WAR SHAMAN: Issues 1 through 16 COMPLETE: War Shaman picks up the story ten years later as Scout descends from a mountain retreat following the death of his wife. The America he returns to is still torn by civil war; the series depicts his search for a new home as he crosses paths with old acquaintances Vaughan and Winter. Arguably Truman’s finest hour, Scout features mature scripts and artwork. Its main fault is a tendency to lose the plot and meander, but overall it’s a very enjoyable read.
