WWII Grouping from a B-29 CrewMember Including his AMAZING Combat Mission Diary! Large WWII Grouping of material from a “Command Control Gunner” in a B-29 Bomber based in Saipan . His position was on the Top and he had Control of more than just one Gun. He flew as a Crew Member in the famous “Little Gem” B-29 Superfortress of WWII. His name is Sgt. George F. Amadon of the 869th Squadron of the 497th Bomb Group based in Saipan . Their Unit was one of the first to land on Saipan and flew the first Missions to Japan . A truly historical Grouping! I obtained this Group directly from the Widow.. This is the same group that Robert Morgan of Memphis belle fame flew in. In fact George flew Mission #11 with Bob Morgan as Pilot. NOTE: If you forward me your e-mail, I can forward you a (50) page .pdf file showing A LOT of pictures. This is what is included: - By far the Best…..His Actual Combat Mission Diary that he carried with him in his pocket. It shows the age, wear and even sweat of flying those horrendous Missions! There are 37 Combat Missions described in detail. Every Mission that he flew is written in pen and identified. I remember one mission he writes about seeing other Bombers falling out of the sky, shooting and striking Japanese Fighter Planes in the skies, in one entry he writes about their Bomber Plane inverting due to the Jet Stream over Japan and in addition he writes about the Bombing Missions of the Fire Bombing Missions (mainly in Tokyo) that they were involved in. He provides details of the Mission in which he was injured and received the Purple Heart. He also writes about the Mission where he received a DFC for flying a very tough Mission . I provided pictures of some of those entries. It is very rare to have the opportunity of owning ANY type of Diary from a B-29 Crew Member! Especially with as complete a grouping like this ! Here are some examples of his MISSIONS written in the DIARY: 10/21/44 : Arrived Saipan , was amazed at how green & high the Island looked. Thought I had never seen such a hot place when we got out of the plane. 10/28/44 : #1 Truk. Expected to see fighters in every cloud. We hit installations, saw very little flak. Had a pacer float plane follow us out about 15 miles way below us. We were at 30,000 feet. 11/5/44 : #2 Iwo Jima ( Rock Island ) – 30,000 feet. Light, but very accurate flak. Some phosphorous bursts (2). Saw (2) Zeros in distance. 11/24/44 : #3 Tokyo – 30,500 feet. 8th Ship over target, Mt. Fuji looked beautiful. Saw barrage flak - Had tracing flak on our tail 50 yards closer each time, we moved closer into formation. Flak continued right on by us, where we would have seen E/A 2,000 feet below us. Saw (44) Fighters taking off from one field. (10) 500 lb. Bombs. (**He drew a little diagram showing their location in the formation**) 1/9/45 : #7 Tokyo – 34,000 feet. Had bomb bay door trouble on way up, lost formation – door closed right off coast. Went over 357 alone – (40) Fighters jumped us on & after Bomb Run. Made approx. (20) attacks. We destroyed (2) and damaged (2) more (our luck day). #2’s only Mission – she went down on next Raid (Capt. Cox) 1/23/45 : #9 Nagoya – 27,000 feet. Never saw so many Fighters. Must have been (300) in area. Saw ME-109. Nick dived right through formation, could have touched him from left blister. Bowling got a Tony. 1/28/45 : #10 Tokyo – 32,000 feet. Was a clear moonlight night. Was in searchlight row & flak ally from land fall to land’s end. (200) lights on us. Barrage flak. Night Fighters came in high on our tail. Flak cracked my blister – blew it out. We started fires in oil refinery & chemical plant – visible 65 miles at sea. 2/23/45 : #11 Kyushu – 32,000 feet. With Col. Morgan (OF MEMPHIS BELLE FAME!!!). Was first flight over Kyushu , no opposition. Saw all of Japanese Navy. Fighter fields jammed with planes. Crew complimented by Colonel. Saw Battle of Iwo Jima...
