4 th -5 th Century BC Greek TerraCotta Aphrodite Face Antefix
Exquisite terra cotta of Aphroditeâe(tm)s face, mold made with traces of a brown slip over the clay. The piece is hollow allowing the clay to be pressed into the surrounding mold with finger prints remaining on the inside. A 45 degree angle hole has been pierced through the back of the piece. T is no evidence of the piece being painted. Aphroditeâe(tm)s features are definitely Greek with rounded facial features, more petite nose and a detailed laurel father forward on the head. This antefix is from a temple dedicated to the God Aphrodite. Antefixes are decorative covers for the ends of tiles situated at the edge of a roof. T is a hole in the back that would have allowed the antefix to hang slightly over the roof edge allowing people below to see the figure. It must have remained on the temple for some time exposed to the elements as evidenced by the wear and pitting, particularly on the nose. T is one chip on the reverse which may have occurred when he piece fell from the temple roof or when the temple was torn down. The piece then remained in the ground for 100s of years as evidenced by the iron oxides, potassium salts and tree root evidence found over the piece. The potassium salts, roots and iron oxides along with the humus rich silts still evident inside the figure suggest that the piece was buried in a location with rich, acidic, moist soils. All of this evidence suggests that this piece was from a temple located inland, but not on the coast, maybe along a river in Greece or Turkey . A wonderful piece of original Greek art at a great price. Dimensions: 17 cm Height, 12 cm at its widest, Base 11 ½ cm by 8 cm. Purchased at a Tucson Museum of Art sale about ten years ago w it had been donated from an old Tucson estate. If you have any questions or require additional information please call me at .
