Three friends have tied their houseboats to shore, in the shade of large sycamore trees. One owner declares himself a patriot by flying an American Flag, high above the roof of the center houseboat. Because Sawyier used this symbol in his painting, this print is titled "4th of July".From 1908 to 1913, Paul Sawyier lived on a houseboat traveling primarily between Shakertown Landing, near High Bridge, and the Camp Nelson Bridge area. During these years he painted over 500 scenes of the Kentucky River and palisades.Two paintings similar to "4th of July" are "Romance on the River" and "River Friends". There are a number of differences in the three paintings. "Romance on the River" is the smallest and shows two couples in small rowboats. It has the least detail and was probably a "study" for the later paintings. "River Friends" is medium in size and shows one man on deck of a double-decker houseboat talking with a male in a nearby small rowboat. In "4th of July", Sawyier seems to have read more
