History In ancient China around 10,000 B.C. the Neolithic Period began its history, and continued on for the next 4,000 years, introducing metallurgy. The Hongshan culture was a Neolithic culture in northeastern China stretching from Inner Mongolia to Liaoning, and Hebei province. Hongshan grave goods include some of the earliest known examples of Chinese jade working. Their themes for the many jade artifacts derived from birds and animals of which the designs carried female supple nature. At the beginning of the Neolithic period, the stone was carved into shapes such as discs ( bi ) or square tubes ( cong or zong ) by hand and placed on the body of the deceased within the tomb.
