These 5 forks are very early. They have all the characteristics of very early coin silver. They are thin. They are flatter than most 19th century forks. They have that wonderful coin color. They could easily be 18th century coin but since the marks on the back are very worn, it is hard to be sure. I believe these are the Cottage pattern or a variation of it. They are in wonderful condition. The tines are extremely sharp and straight across. T is no deformation on the tines at all. They would be a valuable addition to any collection of coin silver flatware.
T are identifying marks on the back of each fork but they are very worn and hard to read. Intense magnification under all kinds of lighting has me convinced that t are 2 initials; possibly CG or GG and then the name White. T is something after White, it could be Mfg or simply a second word that begins with M. The forks have been recently polished very gently (by hand) and are only lightly tarnished. T is no monogram. They are 6-7/8" long and the total weight of all 5 is 4-3/4 ounces. Please note my opening price is less than the scrap value of the silver. T is no reserve. Buying collectible silver flatware at or near scrap value is an outstanding investment. Got a relative who collects? Make these a gift! These are the kind of pieces a collector of coin is looking for. This flatware came from Angeline B. Horton's estate. She was my grandma. She was a well regarded antique dealer in Berlin, Connecticut and began selling and collecting antiques about 1910. She remained active until about 1970. She loved silver, especially coin. Some 35 years after she died, and long after her things had been auctioned off, we discovered a trunk filled with silver she had set aside. These pieces came from that trunk.
