5 inch Inhabited Planet Paperweight by Josh Simpson Josh Simpson is a self taught American glass artist. Over the years he has produced tableware, sculptural works, vases, bowls, objects he calls tektites, and paperweights. His groundbreaking series of paperweights called "Inhabited Planets" remains the most popular of all his many ideas and contributions to the state of the art of glassmaking. The more you know about them the more you'll appreciate them. Each little glass rod that decorates the inner surfaces of these weights is a production effort. The patterns are designed, arranged, fused, stretched, cooled and cut for use in the paperweights. The techniques have been in use for over 2,000 year but the modern words for them are Italian: the results are known as filigrana ("fine threads) and murrine ("little walls"). And these canes are just one facet of the complex processes that are used to create each and every little planet. Some people are reminded of coral reefs, others see abstract swirls of colorful forms, and some see planetary forms straight out of Star Trek, Farscape, and Babylon 5. No matter, they are remarkable, intricate, lovely statements from the amazing vocabulary of a fine poet working in glass! The piece is 5" in diameter.
