This vintage, 1961 #5 PONYTAIL BARBIE is still in her ORIGINAL BOX with BLACK WIRE STAND, Fashion BOOKLET, WRIST-TAG, SHOES, SWIM SUIT, "CAT'S EYE" SUNGLASSES. {The cardboard box liner is replaced as are the safe "Pearl" earrings.}
Barbie is marked "Barbie ® Pats Pend © MCMLVIII By Mattel, Inc." on one side of her butt, with "2" on the other side. The interior of her left leg is marked "N V" up near the hip joint and she is also marked "Japan" on the bottom of her right foot. Barbie has painted eyebrows (they are faded a bit after the arches), molded and painted black eyelashes with blue eyeshadow, painted blue eyes. She has the coral lip color, which has faded over the years{one of the two ways to differentiate the #5 Ponytail ... she has soft mohair for the Ponytail and tight curly Saran hair for the bangs is the other way}. She has darker coral coloring on her finger and toe nail polish. No missing fingers. The hair is in Ponytail style with band around the bottom, and soft curls at the hair's end. There is NO haircolor or style listed on the end of the BARBIE ® box, correct for this version Barbie, with "Easter Parade" and "Gay Parisienne" fashions featured. She is listed simply as Stock No. 850, and marked "JAPAN" on the bottom end, and "Designed and imported by Mattel, Inc., © 1959" on the other end. The doll comes in her original black & white "Zebra" knit swimsuit with black "JAPAN" open-toe SHOES. The "pearl" earrings, which have a silver pearlized look with steel posts, have been replaced. The "Cat's Eye" white plastic sunglasses are original, with blue plastic lenses intact. The white and gold foil "Genuine Barbie ® By Mattel" wrist-tag is also included (although it was damaged when it was originally removedthe wrist "wrap-around" is now taped in place on the back). The fashion booklet, dated 1961, features a color illustration of Ponytail Barbie and boyfriend Ken against a pink background. CONDITION: BARBIE DOLL: As mentioned, there is light fading to the ends of the eyebrows. There are some rubs to the fingernail polish here and there on the fingers. There is no polish at all on the toenails. The hair is uncut and in the original Ponytail style, although it is flattened from laying in the box for so many years. As mentioned, the earrings are replaced, and there are several "pin-dots" in the vinyl around the ears. The "Zebra" swimsuit is fine. No loose seams or runs. Sunglasses are fine. The lens was misapplied (in the factory) and there is a slight opening between the white plastic frame and the blue lens. No breaks, repairs, or other damage. Shoes are in fair condition, with a split across the instep of each shoe. The wrist-tag is in fair condition with the band holding the tag to Barbie's wrist torn in the front and taped in the back. Black painted wire stand is very fine, without bends or heavy wear. BOX: The box is in fair condition. There is a repaired split in the upper left corner. The bottom end flap had broken off and repaired with tape (very common with these old boxes) both inside and out. There is also a darkened band across the top row of legs on the lid, and a stain on the lower right corner. The bottom of the box has some repairs with tape on one side and the lower right corner, with a bit of staining. As mentioned, the white cardboard liner is a replacement. As you can see by the photos, this doll displays SO VERY NICELY!! We do not want any surprises, and therefore have tried to mention anything that might be a concern.
