5 VINTAGE ENGLISH HORSE BRASSES - MOST ATTRACTIVEYou are bidding on 5 different English horse brasses. Horse brasses were first introduced in England in the 1750's to decorate harnesses of horses and used for good luck or status symbols. Today they are used mostly to decorate harnesses for special events or parades, but are also used as decoration for homes, offices or pubs. They can be used by putting them on a strap called a martingale,or mounted on a wall (nice near a fireplace). One horse brass is of York Minster - the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe. This cathedral in York which is called the "minster" (monastic church) sits on the central building on one of the most important dioceses in the Anglican Church- second only to Canterbury. It was consecrated in 1472. The second horse brass is a lovely piece called the Unity- made up of the rose, thistle,and clover. Next is a horse brass of a stag head in a lovely fluted circle border. The fourth one is a very detailed lion's head in a plain border. And the fifth one is a fluted circle border in a heart shape and appears to be an English gentleman in his fancy fedora.
