KNIFE: This is a J.W. Smith & Sons Custom Knives & Tooled Leather custom AUS âe" 6 Drop Point Skinner. The handle has Old Ancient Kauri (see below) & with a beautiful Buckeye Burl bolsters with brass pins and a deep red spacer. The presentation handle has been hand sanded all the way to 10000 grit and then hand rubbed to a high luster. The red spacer shows off the beautiful vine file work that J.W. Smith & Sons is known for. This knife's overall length is 7 3/4âe with a blade length of 3 1/2âe. SHEATH: -included- All new premium grade custom sheath built for this J.W. Smith & Sonsâe(tm) knife. A blade's hardness is an indicator of how well it will hold an edge, and you will often see a reference to the Rockwell scale. A blade's hardness is determined by using a Rockwell machine that forces a small penetrator into the metal's surface. The depth of penetration is correlated to an A, B or C scale reading, called the Rockwell scales. A higher number is assigned to harder steel that allows less penetration. Blade steels are measured on the "C" scale and range from Rc 55-60. In comparison, a diamond will range in the 80s on the Rockwell "C" scale (Rc). This blade has also been Deep Cryogenically Tempered to a Rockwell hardness of 58-59. Cryogenic Tempering is the process of deep freezing materials at Cryogenic temperatures (-300ÂºF). It has been proven to increase the strength and durability of the material being treated, relieve stress, create a more uniform material, and micro-smooth surface. During the process of deep cryogenic tempering austenite is transformed into martensite, which is then tempered to change into tempered martensite. In addition, small complex carbides called eta carbides are precipitated out. This greatly reduces residual stress and promotes "micro-smoothing" of the surface. Wouldn't the blade become more brittle and become damaged? No. The strength of the blade is actually increased after the process. The molecular structure is "filled in" increasing the strength of the material by up to 400%! Also, the blade is not damaged and it will retain its shape. Is t a need to re-treat the blade after sharpening? No. Cryogenic Tempering is a one time, permanent and irreversible process. It is a "through" process, not a surface treatment. In fact, in the case of blades or drill bits, the sharpness will not only last longer, but you will be able to sharpen more times with less removal of material. Each sharpening will demonstrate the benefits of the treatment. With a Rockwell hardness of 58-59 and many of the steels used in modern knife blades like this one are too hard to sharpen with conventional whetstones. To hone blades with a Rockwell of 45 or higher, diamond-impregnated steel "stones" are required. Multiple layers of micron-sized diamonds bonded in nickel to a lat metal surface make up the best stones to sharpen today's hard steel blades such as Deep Cryogenically Tempered AUS-6 and others. Diamond-impregnated steel can even sharpen ceramic blades. The old saying that says a sharp knife is safer is true, because it requires less effort to attain the desired effect. Accidents can occur with dull knives because of the extra effort that it takes to push the blade through.
