An extraordinary interpretation of Los Castillo design #85! … Decidedly constructed by a highly skilled artisan, this singular pin—based on the fabulous onix negro work by Los Castillo —was handwrought in the unusual mixed media, sterling silver and horn. Most probably produced in the 1950’s, perhaps earlier, it boasts a splendidly modernist, quite Picassoesque representation of a human face. The entire piece is composed of an oval plaque of horn, with half the face a surmounted layer of sterling silver that has been hand cut and pierced; and the other half, the horn base, delineated simply with a superb, applied silver eye. The silver work displays sublime minimalist detailing, and the substantial horn plaque exhibits striking, natural highlights and striations. Hallmarks: STERLING , TAXCO , 925 {circle}; CD {angular, inside circle}. This hallmark is cited in Bille Hougart’s The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks . Dimensions: 1-1/8” x 1-13/16”. WEIGHT: 11 grams. Condition: Excellent vintage condition, definitely collector quality, including an injected {pinned through the horn}, sterling silver pinback with an early, but secure, rollover-locking clasp. ~ SUGGESTED READING BEFORE BID!
