50TH NEW YORK ENGINEERS LETTER 4 pages, 5 x 8, in ink, on imprinted regimental letter sheet, with engineer corps insignia and 50th Regt. New York Vol. Engineers, Co. E, Captain O.E. Hine above and below the vignette. Comes with matching envelope addressed to Miss Huldah Lunn, Windham, Bradford Co., Pa., C.D.S., Washington, D.C., Mar. 28/64. The stamp has been cut off. Head Quarters Det.[achment] Eng.[ineers], Hazel River, Va., March 27/64 Sister Huldah, It is with pleasure I sit down to write you a few lines and hope they may find you all enjoying good health. Well Huldah I don't know but you think hard of me for not writing to you more often than what I have. Well I don't know as it is hardly fair, but I have been rather busy this spring and the better part of winter and I have neglected writing on that account. It is not because I have had no disposition to write. No, I always like to write to any of our folks when I have a chance. You may want to know what I have had to keep me busy. Well I have carried the mail and worked in the shop and had the Captain's horses to take care of most of the time so you see I have been some what busy but I don't know as that excuses me from writing to you a letter, but Huldah, as you hear from me in the boys letters, I don't think you had ought to expect me to write very often. I have to write a letter to Rachel every week and one to Mother besides my other correspondence, but Huldah, I will make up for all when I come home by giving you a good long visit. My health has been the best this winter that it has ever since I was married. I am getting to be quite an old pussy. I weigh 170 pounds and that is something not common for me. I think I shall make soldiers of the boys if they keep well. Billy is tough and hearty and I think he enjoys himself very well. George has had one or two rather hard spells but I think that after he has become acclimated he will enjoy better health than he has ever before. A person has got to have just about so much sickness and then will be as tough as a bear. I have been promoted to corporal since the boys came down , but that don't amount to much, only 3 dollars a month and that is not much. I will close hoping to hear from you again soon. Footnote : The 50th New York Engineers were attached to the 6th Corps, Army of the Potomac, in 1864-65, during the Petersburg campaign. They were engaged in the battle of Peebles Farm, and in the Petersburg assaults. In February 1865, using the design of Captain Michael H. McGrath, the commander of Co. F, the 50th New York Engineers built Poplar Grove Church. The structure was built entirely from logs, saplings, and bark gatd in the nearby woods. Its tall steeple with Engineer Corps insignia on the facade made it an appealing subject and it was photographed in 1865 by Timothy H.
