Hahn Air Base Germany was located in the Hunsruck region of the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate, specifically in the small community of Kirchberg. Before the French forces founded an air base on the site in 1951 the area was farmland, and most of the area surrounding the base remains farmland to this day. In 1952, the United States took over the installation and began to erect the seventh largest US Air Base in Europe and the second largest in Germany . (Situated away from the front line of the Cold War, Hahn was a major part of the United States close-knit, continental European air power center.) The 50th Fighter Bomber Wing began moving to Europe July 1953 and completed the relocation to Hahn on August 10, 1953 . (The Wing became the 50th Tactical Fighter Wing July 8, 1958). On September 30, 1991 , the 50th Tactical Fighter Wing inactivated at Hahn Air Base, Germany and was activated as the 50th Space Wing at Falcon Air Force Base, Colorado , January 30, 1992 . (The 50th assumed the personnel, equipment, and functions of the 2d Space Wing, which inactivated at Falcon on that date.) At the end of the Cold War, Hahn AB supported more than 13,000 people and three squadrons of F-16 fighter jets.
