Offered here for sale is a very striking vintage BULOVA ‘SENATOR’ gentleman’s wrist watch dating to 1955 and in excellent original condition throughout. Combining typical 1950s American Art Deco influenced design and fine Swiss engineering, this is a very desirable and collectable period timepiece. Having j ust been SERVICED, CLEANED AND OILED, it is running perfectly and ready to be worn. Apart from its brand new strap, this beautiful 58 year-old watch appears ALL-ORIGINAL. It is signed BULOVA in FIVE places — on the dial, movement, crown and inner and outer case-back, confirming its authenticity. Case The sleek 10k rolled gold ‘waved’ bezel glints as it catches light from all angles and looks stunning on the wrist. It is in very good condition with just the usual light surface scratches one might expect to see on a watch of this age and the only hint of wear anywhere to be seen being to the corners of the back of the lugs. This is barely noticeable and only mentioned here for complete accuracy. Please see the close-up photographs. The stainless steel back is marked BULOVA L5 , signifying a manufacture date of 1955. The acrylic crystal is clean and free of any noticeable scratches. Dial The two-tone dial appears to be original and is superb for its age, featuring an unusual textured outer with raised gilt markers and sub-dial at 6 o’clock. On close examination there are a few signs of ageing, but if anything this adds to the watch’s vintage appeal. The gilt hands show a little tarnish close up, but are otherwise bright and shining. The raised gilt markers present near perfectly and the printed Bulova signature, minute chapter and sub-dial are all in very good condition. All in all, a very eye-catching dial in nice condition. Movement This watch is powered by a Swiss-made Bulova 17-jewel 11AC hand-wound mechanical movement, which winds and sets smoothly via its original signed crown and is running very strongly, keeping good time. This calibre movement was made from 1955 to 1958 and the L5 stamped on the bridge signifies a manufacture date of 1955, the same as that on the case. This movement has just been STRIPPED, THOROUGHLY CLEANED AND OILED, and timed over a period of one week prior to listing for sale. The cost of such servicing when required can be anything up to £100, so please consider this when bidding. Size The case measures approximately 27.5mm wide, excluding the crown, by 28.5mm (38.5mm lug to lug) and 9mm deep including the crystal. The face/crystal measures 21mm x 23mm. The watch is supplied with a brand new, 16mm wide, high-quality, brown padded leather strap which complements its style perfectly. Please note that vintage watches were generally made smaller than those of today and may therefore also suit a lady’s wrist as well as a man’s. This is a beautiful mid-50s vintage Bulova in very nice condition throughout. Vintage watches in general are proving to be a great investment, especially original, stunning-looking examples such as this from the more famous brands.
