This auction is for the beautifully carved natural and genuine Nummulitic Limestone Sp as shown in the pictures below. This terrific specimen has gorgeous chocolate brown coloring surrounding the cream to white Nummulite shell fossils, and a smooth high-gloss polish. It measures 58mm (approx. 2-1/4 inches) in diameter, and weighs more than one-half pound (9 oz.) .
Nummulites are extinct marine protozoans, measuring up to 2.5 inches in diameter, that left behind coil-shaped fossil shells, pieces of which are found in great quantities in and around the Mediterranean, and particularly in Limestone deposits in Egypt. The name Nummulite comes from the Latin 'nummulus,' meaning 'little coin.'
The clear acrylic stand is included.
