A matched set of 6 Blue Staffordshire handleless Custard or Syllabub Cups with delicately molded foot rim and rolled edge. All 6 have the same delightful transfer of a basket of flowers (note that the basket appears to be jumping with joy!). I could not find a name for this pattern, nor a maker (none of the cups are marked), and neither have I seen this form before. They are definitely not tea bowls. Each is 3" in diameter at the top and 2" deep; the base is 1 ½" in diameter. The cups have a wonderful floral transfer on the inside of the rim. All 6 have a very strong pearlware glaze and great medium blue color with crisp, clear transfers: I would date them to the 1820 period.
The overall condition of the 6 cups is very fine: 2 have no flaws, 2 have tiny (less than 1/8") underedge nicks and one of these 2 has a very faint 1/8" line (noticeable only from the underside of the rolled edge); 1 cup has a small (1/4" x 1/8"), shallow edge chip, noticeable mostly from the underside, and the 6th has a 3/8" x 1/8" chip on the foot rim. If anyone has better information on the function of these cups, what they are called technically, and what the pattern is, I will be happy to post an addendum. It is most unusual to find 6 matching cups from this early period of transferware production. Buyer prepays, plus postage.
