This auction is for a lovely 6-piece Victorian Castor (cruet) set. It is silver plate, marked with the Derby Silver Co. brand logo and the word "Quadruple." indicating a high quality of plating. The Derby Silver Company was a manufacturer of silver plate flatware and hollowware in Shelton , Connecticut . They were one of the original companies that joined together to become the International Silver Company in 1898. This fine company was known for their quality and elegance of design. This rare find dates to between 1872 and 1898. Overall, it is in excellent condition considering its age. Both the holder and the bottles are original, with no "marriages", and it is over 110 years old. The castor holder is a majestic 16 inches tall. The silver plate has a beautiful rich luster, and is almost completely free of silver loss. The silver caps are gorgeous and don't show any pitting. The large ornate handle of this castor depicts a lovely intricate design of flowers and leaves. T is a hummingbird at the base of the handle. The skirt of the set has a detailed design of flowers, leaves, branches and hummingbirds. The bottles are clear glass with an etched floral leaf design on the body and a "thumb print" pattern around the body and also at the neck. T is an oil and a vinegar bottle, two shakers, and one mustard or condiment bottle with a flip cap. It also includes a mustard spoon. The coronet style lids are lovely, and the two glass stoppers have a multi-faceted cut design with pointed tips. 4 of the bottles are in excellent condition, with no breaks, chips, cracks or repairs. are the flaws: Each glass stopper has very minor chipping at the lower end, from being placed on hard surfaces over the years. This is hidden when the stopper is in place. One bottle has damage at the neck, which I am showing in one of the pictures, and has been repaired. It functions fine, but would benefit from a professional repair job. In addition, the spoon for the condiment jar is marked "C. Rogers & Bros", and is quite old but probably not original to the set. This is a hard-to-find treasure that you will be proud to add to your collection, use as a conversation piece on your table, or use as a fabulous display in your home.
