A rare find! These friendly but slightly pugnacious pups are placecard holders, the dog on a little porcelain stand with grass behind, a spot for the dutiful hostess to place the name of an honored guest; if you just want these little rascals around to admire, they are certainly up for that, too! T are two kinds of dogs --the first is a set of four in brilliant condition, no chips, no dings, no problems! We are not sure of the breed, , but they look a little like spotted bulldogs--is t such a thing? All four are marked on the bottom with the traditional Metlzer and Ortloff trademark--in this case, an encircled crown with the large letters "M " and "O" twined beneath it; at the edge of each dog the country of origin: Germany . Incised into the material, under the glaze, the numbers/letters 5261/00--which might be "S267/00"; anybody who knows M&O will figure that out easily. The remaining pair of doggies appear to be Airedales, alert little fellows, with clearer incised lettering--"5257/00"--along with the other markings. Unfortunately, one of the two has a condition problem, with one of the blades of grass broken off about 1/4 inch worth. These are wonderful little period pieces that appear to be from the late 1920's or 1930's--but not being experts on the brand, this is only a guess on our part. Sold only as two sets of 2 read more
