Headquarters 61st N.Y.S.V., Caldwell's Brigade, Camp near James River, July 10/62 Dear Parents, Yours of the 28th duly came to hand and I now take the opportunity of answering. Since I wrote you last, times have greatly changed for instead of the Army of the Potomac lying in front of Richmond, it lies in under cover of the gunboats, and we are entrenching ourselves, and I presume will wait here until two or three thousand more soldiers are recruited for nearly half the army of the Potomac is sick or wounded. We have seen some rough times in this skedaddle from in front of Richmond. The enemy were at our heels every step but we whipped them every time and lost no more men then they did. I presume you all had a fine time the 4th. I had for my part lying in the hospital along with nearly a thousand wounded soldiers groaning and raising the devil all the time. Very pleasant indeed. Don't want to see another like it. As for Lew Judson, don't know where he is. Of no account anywhere. Think John Brumley has gone home for he was wounded in the leg. Not very easy matter for me to get home for I read more
