The Franciscan Crown, or "Rosary of the 7 Joys of Mary", (Seraphic Rosary), is a 7 decade rosary focusing on the 7 joys of Mary. It originated in A.D. 1422, when a young man (name unknown) entered the Franciscan Order. Before entering he had the practice of crowning a statue of Mary with fresh flowers...a practice he couldn't continue during his novitiate. When he was thinking of leaving the Order, he had a vision of the Blessed Virgin who said to him, "Do not be sad and cast down, my son, because you are no longer permitted to place wreaths of flowers on my statue. I will teach you to change this pious practice into one that will be far more pleasing to me and far more meritorious to your soul. In place of the flowers that soon wither and cannot always be found, you can weave for me a crown from the flowers of your prayers that will always remain fresh."
Then she asked the young novice to say 1 Our Father and 1 Hail Mary in honor of each one of her 7 Joys; the Annunciation; Visitation; Nativity; Adoration of the Magi; Finding Jesus in the Temple; Resurrection; Assumption & Coronation of the Virgin.
As the young man was deep in the middle of his prayers, as instructed, the novice master noticed him and watched as an Angel wove a garland of fresh roses, inserting a golden lily after each 10th rose. When the novice's prayers were done, the Angel crowned him with the garland. The novice master questioned the novice as to his knowledge of what happened and tafter, the practice of reciting what became known as the "Franciscan Crown" spread.
Although originally 70 Hail Marys, 2 additional Hail Marys were later added to make the total equal 72, the number of years that Our Blessed Mother is said to have lived on earth.
A regular rosary can be used, adding 2 additional decades, or this 7 decade rosary made specifically for the "Franciscan Crown". The beads do not have to be blessed (unless you are praying the Franciscan Crown publicly, and are intending to obtain the plenary indulgence given to those attached to the Franciscan Order, when making this devotion).
Prayer instructions included.
