Personal letter (with envelope dated Jan 6, 1896 Boston mass. included) dated Jan 5, 1896 from: Susan B. Anthony. To: Dr. Kate J. Jackson Dansville NY The Sanatorium. Envelope return address is: National American Woman Sufferage Association Susan B. Anthony President Rochester N.Y. Letter head on half sheet is National American Woman Sufferage Association letterhead and dated Jan 5, 1895 My dear Dr. Kate J.J.- I cannot let this offer go to you without saying a word of memory of Father Jackson and reminding you ......hope that now he is gone out from among us you and your Doctor Jackson will keep the name fresh ....our treasures books from year to year. it was very seldom that he failed to send a contribution at the close or begining of each year and ..passed his time at North Adams ...................(this seems to be a solicitation of funds for the 'cause' or/and perhaps a note regarding the passing of their father? I am not sure of the time frame ) Signed Regards for all, S. B. Anthony BACK TO THE Collection of Letters from 1860s - 1912 by noted persons in History. Letters are in excellent condition with only a few having slight tears or extremely slight wear. T is ONE letter from the collection PER AUCTION. The letters in this collection have come to be, as a part of the ancestry of the Jackson family of which the consignor is a member. The letters in all are as follows and pertain to the Castle on the Hill or OUR HOME on the Hill Sanitorium and Hospital.How did we receive the above and how do I know they are real......The Jackson Health Resort in Dansville NY- better known as The Home on the HILL (see below for historical data) was run by consignors family. The Consignors great Grandmother and Grandfather both having their Medical degrees in the 1870s are referred to below (see Historical text). Within this grouping, are letters addressed to his family members, from: Susan B Anthony; Dr. Emily Blackwell; Maud Ballington Booth (Salvation Army); Winston Churchill (1912); Sister of president, Rose Elizabaeth Cleveland, Gen Custers Widow, Eliz Custer, Pres of NYC RR Chauncy Depew, Myron Clark gov of NY. Charles Deems (pres amer inst of Christain Phil., Temperence), Charles Deems, James Garfield (acknowledgment after his election); widow of U.S. Grant, Horace Greeley, Arthyur Sherburne Hardy, Richmond Pearson Hobson (1901), Wm Dean Howells(1887), Darwin Hudson (1877), Charkes Hughes(1906) (gov. of NY), Consuelo Manchester duchess of Manchester (1908);Caroline Atwater Mason, Charles Read, Thomas Read speaker of house, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Booker T. Washingtron, Kate Douglas Wiggins, Frances Willard, T.W. Wood. Great friendships were formed between most of the above and the Jackson family. HISTORY (thanks to the Historical society of Dansville) Dansville's "Castle on the Hill" Around the year 1798, when the village of Dansville (New York) was still in its infancy, the pioneer settlers were startled to hear a loud, booming sound which emanated halfway up East Hill. They discovered that pent-up geologic forces had given way, and a new spring had burst forth from beneath the surface. The water cure, or hydropathy, was a popular mid-19th-century alternative medicine. Originating in Germany, it was based on the belief that pure water was the key to good health and long life. Those who partook of the water cure would undergo a variety of bathings and showers, wet sheet wrappings, and douches, and, of course, drinking a copious quantity of water. In time, over 200 water cures were in operation across the United States.The Dansville Water Cure opened for business in 1854, but the sickly owner Dr. Bingham would soon bow out of the endeavor. Several times, the facility changed hands, with no one able to make a go of it. At last, in October 1858, came someone who knew how to make the water cure successful, and did. Dr. James Caleb Jackson was born in Onondaga County in 1811. Early in his life he worked as a lecturer and publisher of abolitionist newspapers...
