Your are bidding on an 7-Pc Silverplate Buffet Food Warmer handcrafted by Otto Wolter, a well-known German silversmith from Schwabisch Gmund, just east of Stuttgart, Germany. Otto Wolter and Company has been producing high quality sterling silver tableware since the early 1900s.

The Buffet Food Warmer dates 'pre-1940' and was purchased at an estate auction in Dusseldorf , Germany in 1976. It has been gently used and is in excellent ++ condition with no dents, no monograms or monogram removal, no repairs or other problems of any kind.

This serving piece consists of (7) pieces starting with the 'outer frame' which is actually a chafing dish. It sits atop four curved legs ornately decorated with roses. The four legs are joined together to create the frame for the warming compote which has a flame adjuster. The pierced edges of the 'outer frame' are heavily decorated with acanthus-based foliage and carved shells on each corner.

The first piece 'outer frame' is marked 'Alpacca' and is stamped with Otto Wolter's mark and the word "Versilbert" which is German for 'silverplate'. Also known as nickel silver, Alpacca has no silver content but is an alloy made of nickel, copper and zinc and has a unique silver-white color. Alpacca is extensively used in serving pieces because of its hardness, toughness and resistance to corrosion and it is often used as a base metal for silverplated flatware and holloware. It looks, feels and wears just like sterling.

Of the (7) pieces that make up this Buffet Food Warmer, the 'outer frame' (chafing dish) is the only piece that bears the stamp 'Alpacca'. Some of the remaining (6) pieces have "Versilbert" on them.

The second piece is the liner within which all the remaining pieces fit into.

The third piece is a double sectioned tray with a handle in the center and (2) lids. Each lid can also be used as a separate serving piece.

The sixth piece is the outer lid with (2) large handles on each end, and this piece can also be used as a separate serving piece as well.

The seventh piece to this set is the warming compote and lid which features a flame adjustment.
