Nice ID Hat plate and regimental numbers, for the collar, used by the 71st New York National Guard Regiment Band and from an extensive collection from this regt's band dept . Plate is gold gilt brass with a gold gilt lyre affixed to the center. Plate measures 3 1/4 by 3 `1/4 inches and attaches to the hat by a screw and post fastener which was introduced in 1896. The sun burst style plate is a eight pointed star and first used in 1833-51 for the dragoon cap plate. The band plate is a smaller reduced size as the dragoon plate was 5 x5 inches. T are nice illustrations of the band plates in the RIDABOCK & Co. Catalogue, successors to J.H. McKenney & Co. Manufacturers and dealers in Military goods, 141 Grand St. near Broadway New York. On page 14 are pictures hat plates with the lyre #47 and #43 which is the star burst plate, these plates were used by the regt. band from thw 1870's through 1900. About 60% of the bright original gold gilt remaining. The collar numerals are 7/8 by 5/8 inches and are pin backs. Pictured is the mailing envelope from the firm of LEO FRUST INC. Band and Orchestra Dept, New York and mailed to Lieut. Lambert Eban 71st Regiment Park Ave & 34 St. New York N.Y. Lieut Eban was band leader durning the 1890's of the regt. I have about 50 pairs of the numerals and a half dozen plates. The auction is for one plate and a set (2) collar numerals, the envelope not part of the auction and only for reference but you may make a print from the photograph.
