This is an Original Noel Rockmore from 1971 Titled: Sleeping Girl and Dog It is a 14 X 11 Watercolor, Pen & ACRYLIC Mixed Media on paper and NOT framed but nicely matted. It is from the Shirley Marvin Collection and it is from her SketchBook #23 - Titled: 1971 1st Book in Scrapbook series It is the 2nd page of the Sketchbook and is titled, signed and dated July 71 Scrapbook Series 2 by Rockmore. The catalog Number within the Shirley Marvin Collection given to this work is 71.7.721 This work was purchased directly from The Artist, Noel Rockmore, by Shirley Marvin and comes with a letter of authenticity. What is the Scrapbook series that Rockmore created? The Scrapbook series (also known as the StoryBook series) was created by Rockmore in the early 70s before he was commissioned by George Wein to go to Paris. Several sketchbooks and oils were created and Rockmore intended to complete more but lost interest upon his return from Paris and the breakup of his relationship with Riva. Rockmore was certainly influenced in the creation of cartoons by his father, Floyd Davis, who was called the #1 Illustrator in America by Life Magazine in 1943. Floyd Davis was known for his playful caricatures and cartoons in both magazine stories and advertisements. This study would go on to become an oil called "A boy and his dog" with the boy hugging the dog and that would go on to become one of his more famous French Quarter Prints in 1978. This work is HISTORIC in that it is the first that we see of this theme and it also has "Scrapbook Series 2" written into the description. He would later start doing SB 3 short versions to represent the third page of the Scrapbook series. This work is UNUSUAL because the subject matter is very disturbing and would certainly terrify and small child even though he titles it "sleeping girl with dog." Rockmore loved creating tension in his works and sometimes it really works to the point of taking over the work and your emotional reaction. It is interesting that his subsequent versions of this theme get softer and softer and much less tense. He would also do several versions of children dreaming, once again with much less tension than this one, that could be yours! Who was Noel Rockmore? See Wikipedia - /wiki/Noel_Rockmore Noel Rockmore was an undiscovered American Master of the last half of the 20 th Century who split his lifetime between New York and New Orleans. He was recognized and had shows at The Whitney, MOMA, the Met & the Hirschorn as Noel Davis before he was 28. His parents, Floyd Davis & Gladys Rockmore Davis , were two of the most recognized artist in America from the 1930s through the 1940s. The Noel Rockmore Project (website - / ) has been working to bring this master artist to light for the past three years after 1400 works of Noel Rockmore were discovered in Shirley Marvin's storage in New Orleans after Katrina. There is a nice 10 page Rockmore article that has just come out in a major publication by John Ed Bradley called The Tomb of Noel Rockmore /article/tomb-rockmore and Rockmore will be included in a Show in Marfa Texas this spring. Rockmore will also have another show in Lagrange, GA that opens with a three day bash on October 28-30, 2011. A book, screenplay, documentary and movie are all in the near future.
