Of the 77 VINTAGE PIECES OF KINGS PATTERN SILVERPLATE CUTLERY in this lot, 66 are stamped MAPPIN & WEBB , A1 and S&P . The flatware included in the lot and their lengths are detailed below: I nches Centimeters 13 Teaspoons ` 5.9 15.0 11 Tablespoons 7.5 19.1 11 Large tablespoons 9.2 23.4 10 Salad forks 7.1 18.0 18 Regular forks 8.1 20.6 2 Ladles 7.7 19.6 1 Large ladle 11.7 29.7 1 Large serving spoon 13.4 34.0 9 Table knives 10.1 25.7 1 Marrow scoop (?) 8.2 20.8 The combined total weight of the 77 pieces of cutlery (excluding the case and packing) is 13 pounds, 11.7 ounces or 6.23 kilograms. The 11 pieces of flatware not stamped Mappin & Webb consist of 9 table knives that have what may be a tiny Birmingham anchor town mark on the base of the handle and no other marks, a teaspoon stamped Homes & Edwards and a piece stamped Gorham that mignt be a marrow scoop. All 77 pieces of cutlery are Kings pattern silver plate. An interesting alternative possibility regarding the anchor on the knives is that, instead of indicating that they were manufactured in Birmingham , might indicate that they were made for the US Navy. Kings pattern silver plate flatware has been used in the officers' wardroom of US Navy ships since the 1890s. The Mappin & Webb pieces have a family crest on the handles which can be seen clearly in one of the photographs. The table knives have an ornate S on their handles. As the photographs clearly indicate, the flatware show the normal scratches that one would expect on old silverplate. Nonetheless, the photographs also reveal that the silver plate on this cutlery is in very good condition considering its age, largely because my parents kept it packed away in a closet for many decades. Mappin & Webb traces its origins to the silversmith workshop in Sheffield founded in 1774 by Jonathan Mappin. The firm is now one of the leading retailers of fine jewelry and silverware in the UK and is silversmith to Her majesty Queen Elizabeth II and to His Royal Highness Prince Charles. The wood Rogers Brothers cutlery box shown in the photograph is in no better than fair condition with scratches and chips on the outside and well worn cloth on the inside. Its dimensions are 13 x 6.5 x 18 inches and it weighs 8 pounds, 5.1 ounces (3.755kg). I will be happy to send it to the winning bidder. However, not including it with the cutlery would lower the buyer's shipping costs. Please email me if you have any questions. Shipping charges are based on actual cost. (No additional fees.)
