8 FT. TALL COROMANDEL SCREEN OF THE EMPRESS TSZCHI
Created to honor the passing of the Empress Dowager, Tszchi, this is a piece of History and an amazing Work of Art. The only woman to reign in all of China's 5,000 year history. Tszchi, (pronounced soo she) a one time concubine, became Empress who ruled 400 million people for nearly 50 years. The Empress appointed two emperors during her reign including The last Emperor, Pu Yi. In 1908, at the age of 73, Tszchi passed away. The screen depicts the Empress in the clouds above her palace, being taken to Heaven in her royal carriage, towed by a spotted deer. The reverse side of the screen, done in white lacquer is another example of master craftsmanship. The beautiful movement of the red crested cranes among the pine trees and attention to detail will satisfy the most discriminating art collector.Symbols of Good Fortune, Longevity and Immortality decorate the entire Screen: The Red Lacquer represents Good Luck and the Deer, Pine Trees, and Red Crested Cranes represent Longevity and Immortality.
