8 PCS - MARY WRIGHT - COUNTRY GARDENS
Mary Einstein Wright was the wife of famous designer Russel Wright. Creamer: 4½" x 4" x 2¼ ", small chip on spout. Indention opposite spout so one could pick up to pour. Country Gardens mark on the unglazed bottom. Sugar Bowl: 3" x 3" x 2", very good condition, no chips. Opening for spoon 1 ½" at widest area. Country Gardens mark on the unglazed bottom. Spoon: 3" long, 1 ½ wide spoon. Chip on back of handle and small crack w spoon rests. Small Plate: 6" Diameter, Country Gardens Mary Wright mark on the glazed bottom. Very good condition, no chips or cracks. Four Salad Plates: 7½" Diameter, all have the Country Gardens Mary Wright mark on the glazed bottom. Good condition. Small chips and nicks. Mary Einstein Wright was the wife of famous designer Russel Wright. She was a major force in promoting her husband designs. A sculpture student when they met, she was herself a talented designer creating pottery with color and form with an Asian look. Mary was an outgoing New Yorker and a student of the Russian sculptor Alexander Archipenko. The Bauer pottery of Atlanta experimentally introduced her " Country Gardens " dinnerware line in 1946. The line did not prove popular and never went into full production, despite Mary and Russel's efforts. As a result, Country Gardens pieces are difficult to find and prices reflect their rarity. With Mary's death in 1952, Russel lost a valued partner and creative collaborator. Produced experimentally by Bauer in 1946 FYI: 53 pieces in assorted shapes and sizes in this green-glazed Country Gardens ceramic by Mary Wright, sold at Sothby's for $4,300.00. Colors are important in determining price. So are unusual pieces that had limited production. Email with questions.
