This is a matching set of 8 soup spoons made by Frank W. Smith Silver Co. for WK. Vanderslice Co., San Francisco's oldest and finest retail silver establishment in the early 1900's. Frank Smith's Bead pattern is dated 1917, and was discontinued that same year. Each spoon is 5 5/16" long, the beaded handles are 3 1/2" long, and the bowls are 1 3/4" X 1 1/2". All 8 are stamped with the "S" and lion with long tail stamp for Frank W. Smith. All 8 Are stamped "Sterling" on the backs of the handles. Six of the spoons are stamped "WK. Vanderslice Co.". These spoons are in excellent condition; t are no monograms, dents, or scratches on any of the spoons- just the expected slight patina of time.
Frank W. Smith Silver Co. was in Gardener, Massachusetts from 1886 - 1958. The history of the WK. Vanderslice Co. is a fascinating read; they manufactured their own silver, copied some brand names, and sold other brands at retail. These are not copies of Frank Smith because the manufacturer's stamp is on each one. I am calling these "Rare" because Replacements Ltd. and my other sources do not list the soup spoons as available. I am not an expert in Sterling Silver, but, have thoroughly enjoyed researching these spoons. I love the simple beaded pattern because it can mix beautifully with other patterns in your place settings. I know these are soup spoons; but, for me, they scream "Hot Fudge Sundae". I will be happy to answer any questions and/ or combine shipping.
