This is an Original Noel Rockmore from 1972 Titled: Karen & Bartley New Orleans It is a 14 X 11 pen on paper and NOT framed but nicely matted. It is from the Shirley Marvin Collection and it is from her SketchBook #26 - Titled: 1 972 Paintings & Friends Portraits It is the 12th page of the Sketchbook and is signed, titled and dated 1972 by Rockmore. The catalog Number within the Shirley Marvin Collection given to this work is 72.809 This work was purchased directly from The Artist, Noel Rockmore, by Shirley Marvin and comes with a letter of authenticity. Who was Karen and why did Rockmore sketch her so often? At this time, we do not know who Karen was other than he sketched her with Bartley who could have been a boyfriend or just a friend. There have been a few stories of Rockmore sketching a couple or doing a commission work of someone’s spouse and invariably trying to seduce them as well. He was relentless and often quite successful, sometimes he was not but it certainly was not for a lack of trying. Chances are that Karen was someone who was in close proximity to where Rockmore lived or where he liked to hang out (Johnny Whites, Alpine, Pres Hall). If you were in Rockmore's sphere and he thought you had an interesting look, you might got sketched quite often. The color work looks like a preparation for an oil so this well could have been a commission work. Rockmore spread these sketches of Karen around to many different collectors. One of the exciting things about getting a sketch like this is that there just might be another interesting chapter to the story about Karen that unfolds as Rockmore’s story becomes more public. There is also an interesting figure in this one and that is Bartley, not sure if Bartley was a significant other or just a friend in the French Quarter . Who was Noel Rockmore? He was recognized and had shows at The Whitney, MOMA, the Met & the Hirschorn as Noel Davis before he was 28. His parents, Floyd Davis & Gladys Rockmore Davis , were two of the most recognized artist in America from the 1930s through the 1940s. The Noel Rockmore Project (website - / ) has been working to bring this master artist to light for the past three years after 1400 works of Noel Rockmore were discovered in Shirley Marvin's storage in New Orleans after Katrina. There is a nice 10 page Rockmore article that has just come out in a major publication by John Ed Bradley called The Tomb of Noel Rockmore /article/tomb-rockmore and Rockmore will be included in a Show in Marfa Texas this spring. Rockmore will also have another show in Lagrange, GA that opens with a three day bash on October 28-30, 2011. A book, screenplay, documentary and movie are all in the near future.
