It can be said without exaggeration that , in the Kusana period, the Brahamanical icon was born.... THIS IS AN EXTREMELY RARE ARCHAEOLOGICAL FIND OF the 8 th century AD FEATURING A HAND SCULPTED CARVING OF LORD SHIVA From the KUSHAN EMPIRE THIS STUNNING WORK OF ART IS A MUSEUM QUALITY SPECIMEN THAT IS TRUE ARCHAEOLOGICAL TREASURE COVERED IN A WONDERFUL PATINA OVER THE CENTURIES THAT EXUDES A SPIRITUAL PRESENCE THAT IS TRULY MESMERIZING I am proud to present this rare masterwork carving of the great Lord Shiva with his son Lord Ganesha at his feet as an infant child ! A close look at this sculpture will reveal an exquisitely beautiful carving of Lord Shiva in a rare four -arm aspect by an artist whose hand exuded a delicate and spiritual touch. The detail and intricacy of this sculpture is incredible with Lord Shiva's robes , jewelery to the baby elephant at his feet which is most likely his son Lord Ganesha! Lord Shiva's eyes are down-cast and heavy lidded while the nose aquiline and the lips full exuding the Hellenistic touch that was carried over from the unrivaled Golden era of the Gupta period into the Kushan empire and onto the end of the 8th-10th century marking the zenith of perfection in this nations perfection of rock-sculpture. Time has taken its toll on this antique masterwork as a layer of dirt and discoloration coat the surface of this statue , however the piece has been preserved in the most pristine of conditions void of any major damage or breakage at all can be seen by the pics below - making this a truly wonderful artifact from the 8 th century. This one of a kind masterwork demands its respect and due and hence I have set a reserve price albeit a reasonable one for this museum quality treasure in the art of the Mathura Condition: Exceptional, as shown. HYDERABAD INDIAN ARTS COLLECTION This is a Museum Quality Sculpture. Appraisal: $5,600 We are proud to offer only genuine 100% guaranteed ancient art. We encourage the successful bidder to show this to an expert for peace of mind. You are considering an exceptionally rare hand sculpted 8 th century carving of the full body of Lord Shiva of the Kushan / Kusana period. This sandstone from which this intricate piece was carved is typical of the works from the Mathura that evolved during this Kusana period to reach a very high fineness of execution and delicacy later on in their modeling.Experts are of the opinion that the Kusana Mathura style commences with a full-blooded naturalism based on the later Satavahana sculpture, but with a diamond-hard quality reminiscent of some of the finest Egyptian work. The lively immediacy of this style is well shown in this depicition of Lord Shiva.
