This is a beautifully detailed example, in excellent condition, of a vintage 1920's-1930's Lorelei by Van Briggle. The Catalogue of Van Briggle Designs by Robert Wyman Newton, lists the Lorelei as designed by Artus Van Briggle in 1900, and lists the piece as 9 1/2 inches in height. This Lorelei is just a smidge above 9 1/2 inches, as shown. This Lorelei has no chips, cracks, fleabites, repairs, dings, bruises, glaze misses or other damage. It does have very fine crazing, visible upon very close inspection - not when viewed at arm's length, and crazing is consistent with the pieces from the 1920's-1930's era. The bottom mark shows the double-A signifying Anne & Artus Van Briggle, and "VAN BRIGGLE CoLo. SPGS." on the gritty, sandy clay.Throughout the years, the styling of the Lorelei has changed, as has the position of the head & face, and the overall height increased. The earlier pieces, such as this one, have the head & face looking downward, and into the recesses of the vase. The later pieces have the head & face in a more upward, outward-looking position. The one photo shows this Lorelei, with a taller 1950's moonglo white, and a 2006 plum version that is taller still. The details on this piece are exquisite. The flowing hair & gown seem to emerge from the clay, and do not appear more "heavily carved into the surface of the clay" as with many newer models. On the back of the earlier designs, as this one; you can clearly see the shoulder & back musculature, the buttocks of the model showing through the folds of the gown, and her tiny foot. Her face is very delicate & dainty, her slender arm wrapped around the opening of the vase, and her hand & fingers are visible, including her thumb atop the rim of the vase. The flowing hair is expertly crafted & highlighted by the use of the darker blue overspray. The drapery over her back & shoulders is exquisite. Can I find any fault with this piece? The faint crazing is post-production, but found in every piece of Van Briggle we own that was made during this period. Why in this period, and not before or after? We don't know, and would appreciate hearing from any collector who does. T are no glaze misses, not if you look very, very closely at the flowing hair, t is one tiny spot w the darker blue overspray is not as thick and appears a tiny bit lighter as it shows more of the underlying light turquoise color - and that is all I can find!Although The Collector's Encyclopedia of Van Briggle Art Pottery by Richard Sasicki & Josie Fania lists the price range of the 1920's Lorelei in Ming Turquoise over $1000; my reserve is much lower. We welcome emails with questions or requests for additional photos.
