FLUTED QUEEN CONCH! (Strombus gigas) Did you know that Queen Conchs are a protected species in Florida? Tfore, the shells can only be taken when the animal is gone and if the empty shell is not on a protected reef. This makes getting speciman shells very difficult since one seldom finds the operculum. Within days of the shell becoming empty, it becomes a home for ANY WATER INHABITANT looking for a place to live such as Brittle Stars, Fireworms, Shrimp, etc. Also, the wonderful interior begins to erode. Finding a "PERFECT" QC is a matter of luck and timing. This is a beautiful Queen Conch shell that I found while snorkeling in the Atlantic Ocean in about 6 foot of water. It had been cleaned out by a predator recently and was still in great shape -especially the inside. Even though the conch animal appeared gone, I still cleaned the shell thoroughly in bleach and water. Notice the great color even after sitting in bleach. I also have to use dental tools to pick off the outside calcium buildup. I enjoy the process and seeing the perfection of a shell emerge. However, it is a long task. Okay, to specifics. This Queen Conch weighs just under 2 1/2 pounds. It is about 9" long with a face width of about 7 1/4". The inside color is ROSY pink going to cream with a peachy-apricot shade on the lip. The inside has a satiny-sheen to it. The outside color is ivory, cream, and butterscotch. The apex has worm canals on it and the outer lip has some chipping near the shoulder. What makes this shell so SPECTACULAR is the FLUTING of the outer lip. It just has a beautiful flow and the various growth lines are slightly visible. Growth lines show age like rings of a tree. This is a beautiful shell with only a small amount of the chips and breaks that can come from existing in an ocean environment. Please study the pictures carefully as I have tried to show both the beauty of the shell and its imperfections. This is the shell you will receive. If you need more pictures or have questions, please ask. The bidding on this shell begins at $14.95. Shipping and handling (ebay, paypal, credit cards, boxes, etc.)is $10.95 via FedEx ground with $100 of insurance included. If you are wanting this shipped to Alaska or Hawaii, please check with me before bidding to find out S&H charges. I DO NOT SHIP OUT OF THE U.S Due to some buyer problems recently, I have had to redo my payment requirements. PAYMENT IS BY PAYPAL ONLY. PAYMENT BY PAYPAL IS DUE WITHIN 72 HOURS (3 DAYS) FROM AUCTION END. IF I HAVE NOT RECEIVED PAYMENT WITHIN 72 HOURS, YOU WILL BE REPORTED TO EBAY FOR NONPAYMENT AND I WILL RELIST THE ITEM.
