On offer is a lovely late Georgian period English 9K yellow gold (tested) pin with two colors of human hair woven together under a crystal oval. The pin has its original âeoeCâe clasp and hinge and the front is nicely engraved and chased with scrollwork patterns. The gold work on the piece is hollow with a closed back. I am listing this pin as a love token pin (with the locks of woven hair from each member of a couple--one blonde and one brown). Although many people assume that all hairwork jewelry is related to mourning for lost loved ones, in fact such work was also done as a gesture of affection between couples and among friends and family members. At a time when photography did not exist, a lock of hair was one way for people to have a tangible reminder of someone dear to them. Also, in the case of this pin, t is no engraving of a name or birth/death dates on the back of this piece which, although not always done, was quite common on memorial jewelry. The pin measures 1 ¼âe wide by 1 1/16thâe high. It measures 1 ½âe in width when you include the pin in the measurement. (In many Georgian and early Victorian pieces the pin stem was made longer than the width of the frame of the piece). It weighs 6 grams. The hair compartment is covered with a bezel set beveled crystal. A wonderful start of or addition to an antique jewelry collection!
