This beautiful piece period example is one of the finest quality period arts and crafts woven floor coverings ever available. It measures 248 knots (ends of worsted wool cords) per square inch. Only a handful of exclusively American milled carpets were woven in this quality during this period. This quality was woven under the strict supervision of the M. J. Whittall mills of Worcestor (now Worcester) Massachusetts. It is one of their finest pattern from what is now known as the American arts and crafts movement. It was marketed and sold to be used with the American manufactured furniture of the time, like the Stickley and his contemporaries. Collector's will note this pattern and colour palette is highly sought after and its appearance on the market is extremely rare. The Whittall's moved from England in 1880 to Worcester, Mass (then Worcestor) w they opened their mill in a very small building resembling a school house. They enjoyed most of their success from that time until the great depression and again for the decade following World War 2. They remained in business until the late 1950s. Many of their wonderful rugs remain in good condition today, after 75 to 100 years of use, a true testament to the pride and quality of the guilded age of America's rug industry. Whittall is considered the most recognized name in wilton floor covering. Their product lines included numerous qualities of jacquard woven "wire" wiltons, axministers and even a special line of hand-woven carpets. At the height of their empire, they rivaled the success and fortures of J. P. Morgan. Their highest quality weave, the most superior quality of the entire industry, was established as a household name and their famous "anglo-persian" rugs the envy of every other rug weaving mill in the world. Today Whittall rugs are the most sought after vintage American woven rugs ever made. Two generations after the mill closed, Whittall's quality remains a standard to which all others are measured by. And most amazingly, with 50 to 75 years on most of their rugs still in use, the Whittall anglo-persian wilton rugs remain in superb condition. Whittall stands as the most valueable and appreciable American rug ever made. From the Whittall publication "Inside Facts": All Whittalls productions were made from imported wools -- becuase this particular king of wool is the toughtest, strongest and most resilient in the world and gives the greatest wear. Every detail of Whittall manufacture measures up to the highest standard. An army of experts, wide-awake and up-to-date is required to make the raw wool into the finished fabric -- sorthing and blending, scouring, drying, preparing, carding or combing, spinning, skeining, scouring again, dyeing, dye-testing, designing, card cutting, weaving, shearing, finishing -- the success of each process assured by the use of the finest machinery and the most efficient of help. The rug has an exceptionally good consistent pile over the entire rug without any low, worn, or threadbare areas. The rug is free of stains and odors (animal or otherwise). The original fringe was missing -- it has been replaced with our exclusive historically accurate reproduction genuine wilton fringe woven on our own looms. This rug has been professional hand cleaned by our own conservation team with a restorative thorough washing adhering to the National Institute of Textiles and A.I.C. (American Institute for the Conservation of Historic and Ar...
