Five Day Auction! A RARE LARGE PETTICOAT LAMP WITH TRIPLE WICK WHALE OIL BURNER! CIRCA 1820-1840!! Shown with a more typically sized 4" tall petticoat for size comparison From a prominent Boston, Massachusetts collection of fine and early lighting devices and metalwares, this very fine and large petticoat lamp with a very unusual triple wick whale oil burner is surely one of the best that I have ever encountered. Its presentation is VERY IMPRESSIVE ! Unusually large for a petticoat lamp, it stands about 5.5" tall with its petticoat base measuring 3.6" in diameter . It is in excellent well used condition with no cracks, breaks, repairs, dents or rust. About as pristine an example that you may ever see, it is finely constructed of rolled iron which appears to be pewter washed rather than tinned and, retains the large majority of its finish. It also retains its original pewter filler cap, which is tightly seated so I haven't tried to remove it. And, it is clearly marked D C on its strap handle! Add to that it's extremely rare triple wick brass and tin whale oil burner with wick adjusting slots, and you have a very special and very unusual, if not unique, lamp that still burns beautifully! Ready to be a dazzling display in any early room setting, this beautiful petticoat lamp will also be a highlight in any advanced collection of iron, lamps and lighting, primitives, "high country" or the finest Americana! EXTRAORDINARY WHALE OIL LIGHTING!! **Check other auctions @ echodale for more Great Lighting!!** Maker marked DC on the handle
