This is a beautiful Mission piece, An Original and Genuine Antique English Edwardian Arts and Crafts Mission 4 Drawer Cabinet w/ Doors, Presented to Surveyor of Mines, Deaf Hill Colliery, England, Dated 1905..! This is such a wonderful piece, see 6 pics above and 14 below, that it is difficult to know w to begin describing it, but I'll start at the top and work down. Let into the top is an inscribed copper plaque that reads, 'Presented to Mr & Mrs Thomas Russell by the Officials, Workmen and Friends of Deaf Hill Colliery on the Occasion of Their Marriage 5th September 1905.' For those who are interested in its mining associations, I have included a pic of Number 3 Pit, Deaf Hill Colliery, below this description. That shaft was sunk in 1891 and was 1000' deep..! Deaf Hill, which closed on February 25, 1967, is located about 8 miles from Durham, in North-East England. It produced coal for household use in fires, for making coal gas and for steam-fired boilers from its opening in 1877 and, at its peak in 1930, employed over 1000 men. Owned by the Trimdon Coal Company, it had a chequered history, some 74 men having been killed in accidents t One man, William Wright, a hewer, slightly injured his thumb on Sept 9, 1892, and died from blood poisoning as a result of it 18 days later..! According to my research, the recipient of this cabinet, Thomas Russell, beacme His Majesty's Surveyor of Mines, Certificate #143, at Deaf Hill in 1912, just seven years after his wedding. The second-to-last pic below is an old photo of Deaf Hill Colliery. Meanwhile, back at the cabinet... Of solid quartersawn oak, it features two hinged front doors with their original copper faux hinges, handles and working lock with key, and they open to reveal four graduated, compartmentalized drawers lined with green baize or felt. The front of each hand-dovetailed quartersawn oak drawer is complete with its original handle flanked by celluloid labels, and the bottom of the interior bears the maker's label that reads, 'MANUFACTURED BY WALKER & HALL, SHEFFIELD.' Given that manufacturer's name, that I know to be one of Sheffield's most famous and finest cutlers, I presume that this was originally made as a canteen of cutlery or flatware cabinet. Whatever its original purpose may have been, it would make superb storage for any collector of small items, e.g. coins, stamps, medals or medallions, and it would make the most fabulous and unusual jewelry box. Its only flaws are that the bottom tip of the top left-hand faux hinge has snapped at some time and been re-attached, and the back has an age-related shrinkage split. It measures 20 1/2" wide by 16" deep by 13 1/2" high and is exceedingly heavy, far beyond what you might imagine.
