is a stunning original antique opium pipe and pouch in gorgeous condition. All metalwork is silver, the Netsuke is carved ivory with a chop on the reverse. The latch on the pouch is an ornately carved dragon guarding a coral colored jade ball. The inside of the latch, which is also silver, is engraved with smoke puffs. The silver on the connecting chain is raised opium poppies and other leaves. The ivory netsuke is carved with a man locked in a desperate struggle with a carp, and the man appears to have thrust a dagger into the carp's guts. The pipe is engraved with birds. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a one-of-a-kind artifact from the opium dens of the far east. This literally came out of the bottom drawer of an 1850's vintage highboy, and is now available for the first time since it was brought back from the Orient. THIS AUCTION IS FOR USA BIDDERS ONLY!!! THIS ITEM CANNOT SHIP OUTSIDE US. DUE TO ENDANGERED SPECIES (IVORY) LAW.
