Date: Chinese Republic Period (1911-1949) Description: A very nice pair of hand painted, Chinese Famille-Rose, Mirror Image Style, Wall Vases. Garden pictorials depict a pair of curious pheasants perched on a pair of scholar's garden rocks. Old fashioned and classical, pink and peach Chinese roses flourish on well-nourished plants in this ideal, Chinese garden scene. Lovely diaper pattern in pinks, yellow, and blues. Very nicely painted in a mirror-image style. These vases are showcased in their own, original, presentation stands. The stands were custom made of solid wood, and are wonderfully carved in a fluted pattern. The fluting fully surrounds each vase, appearing like rays of sunlight. An excellent investment in a rare-to-find pair of old, hand painted vases from the Chinese Republic Period. Condition: The porcelain vases are in excellent condition; the original wooden stands have some age cracks as well as some small chips to some areas of the surface (e-mail me for close-up photos). Signature/Mark: Qianlong Mark Size: Vases are approximately 5.5" H x 5.0" W x 1.88" D; with stands, approximately 7.75" x 6.5" x 3.75" Other Notes: According to Chinese lore, the pheasant is considered one of t he twelve symbols of sovereignty . In 1759 the twelve symbols were reserved exclusively for the robes of the "Son of Heaven", the Emperor of China. As a "symbolic interpretation of the universe" , the pheasant, along with the other 11 symbols of imperial authority, "assumed a cosmic significance and represented the emperor as the ruler of the universe." Other Chinese officials also had pheasants embroidered on their uniforms as symbols of nobility and literary refinement.
