A beautiful and large

MEDICAL BLEEDING BOWL

made of copper, the center has been hammered out and the edge is folded

around an iron ring.

On the back t is the original suspension loop.

During the Middle Ages till the mid-19th century, bleeding - or cutting a vein

of the arm and letting the blood run out - was seen as a cure for many

diseases.

This bowl, with its half-moon opening on one side, was placed against

the arm to catch up the blood.

Often mistaken with barber's bowl (the opening is much larger to fit around

the neck and it mostly has a rim for standing up, the opening fits

exactly against my arm), these medical bleeding bowls are very rare

and sought after.

A beautiful piece of medical history !

condition: in very good, original condition, with an old repair (probably done when it was made .. as it has the same patina as the rest of the bowl) and a small crack around the edge (see pictures), but this is nothing to worry about. It comes in it as found condition, unpolished .. as some buyers prefer it shiny, other don't.
