If you appreciate receiving good value for your money please, feel free to bid.. The true "no reserve" auction of a: "Very Nice, 1 11/16" Semi-translucent Bolen Point from Florida!" This nice point is lifetime guaranteed to be authentic. It is absolutely solid and whole with no restoration or rechipping. "Opinion" The example offered was legally recovered from a dry land site in Florida. It is a well made, authentic, Bolen Point whose length has been significantly reduced due to repeated resharpenings. The blade edges are both beveled and serrated. The point has strong barbs and a very well notched base that has been ground. It is an attractive well patinated example that is made of a very high-grade, semi-translucent (bordering on Chalcedony) Coastal Plains Chert that is a pleasing tan. Bolen Typology The Bolen point was named by Ripley P. Bullen in 1958 for examples that he described which were excavated from the Bolen Bluff site near Gainesville, Florida. The property on which the site itself sits was owned by an African American family named Bolen. - Ripley Bullen died in late 1976. It has been stated that, "He (Ripley Bullen) left behind a legacy of archaeological research which few people can match. Ripley would be the first to admit that his Guide is by no means perfect; it was meant to continue to be revised as new information was gatd." The Bolen Cluster of point types is commonly considered to be represented by a group of well made, small to large sized, triangular bladed, corner or side notched point and knife forms with convex blades. These points are reduced through alternative beveling and are usually serrated. It has been noted that, blades are excurvate in early stages, becoming straighter and often drill like in later stages of resharpening. The result is that first stage Bolens are lenticular in cross section while resharpened examples often become markedly rhomboidal. The tip is broad and the stem is expanding. The shoulders are barbed. Please, note that *notching and basal treatment of these points is observed to vary considerably and various subtypes are generally thought to exist. Basal edges can be straight, convex or concave. As with the majority of early types, the hafting area is ground. The range of the Bolen point types distribution is commonly considered to constitute the Deep South States of: Florida, South Alabama and Georgia. Although, examples may have been recovered from as far North as South Carolina and referred to as Taylors. Thankfully, examples exist in collections and are available for comparative analysis of this point type. Interesting (to this writer), recent published scientific data exists and suggested dates for this remarkable point type are now currently from 11,500-10,500 YBP! Large well executed Bolens are often viewed as representing some of the most aesthetically pleasing examples of ancient stone material technology and command large premiums. "Considering Bolen as a Culture" Bolen is commonly considered to immediately follow Greenbrier within the Florida cultural chain. Repeated studies of ancient Bolen Cultural sites clearly supports that these early people had a wide ranging diet in part consisting of the processing of large amounts of game which they hunted themselves. Studies have already begun to suggest and may one day directly point to the birth of a local group (TransPaleo/Protoarchaic) of highly intelligent, intuitive, Deep South peoples who were extraordinarily well adapted if not the masters of their environment! "Thanks for looking!" & "Enjoy collecting Florida artifacts! They are treasured remnants of our past."
