A Very Nice Asante Akua'ba Figure

This doll is large: measuring 36 cm., or 14 inches in height. The diameter of the disc shaped head is 16 cm, (6.25 inches). The thickness of the head tapers from 1 cm at the chin to 3 mm. at the crown of the head. The refined and sensitive carving sets this piece apart from most examples one sees. The patina is all original: black natural pigment and binder with a fine crackle to it and organic residue in the recesses. The condition is excellent with no damage or repair. At the base, though, one can see a break in the symmetry which likely was t from early on. To me, this is a museum quality example; very beautiful.
