Collectors; this is a BIG, NICE AAA! Stunning 3.3 inch red ammolite on both sides! Some bright, rainbow green and yellow . I'd give it 95% coverage of beautiful, opalized ammolite. W are the red ammonites? I searched several days at the famous Tucson Gem, Mineral and Fossil show and asked my friends who buy direct from the mines, "were are the red ones?" No one had seen many, especially the big ones. I was afraid the sought after red ammolite ammonites were finally all gone . At last, hidden under a table in a room full of high dollar T-rex and mammoth fossils, I spotted a box of the illusive quarry. Success! And brought to you Nice, opalized ammolite is getting hard to find. This is one of my top fossils with beautiful iridescent ammolite! I do not retouch my photos ( you may note the holder's hand in other seller's ammolite photos is bright pink - a sign the colors have been enhanced in Photoshop ) and the fossil looks even better in real life.... a miracle from 100 million years ago ! Ammolite is a rare, opalized condition that occurs in only a few out of many ammonite fossils. Beautiful to look at, and quite collectable . Acquire them now, they're not making any more! A centerpiece of any collection. Hand picked at this year's famous Tucson Mineral Show - get the best first! Size: 3.3 inchesGrade: AAA Rarity: Direct from Madagascar, ammonites are increasing in price as mines deplete. I only have a handful more of these with ammolite....... This is a piece of both art and science Many conversations and compliments will come from your display of this wonderful, ancient creature. Perfect for office, home, or school. Ammonites are extinct marine mollusks related to the modern squid, octopus and Chambered Nautilus from 70 million years ago. Ammonite fossil shells are of particularly beautiful spiral forms. The ammonite’s shell contained a spiraling progression of ever-larger chambers divided by thin walls called septa. The animal only occupied the last and largest chamber. A thin living tube called a siphuncle passed through the septa, extending from the ammonite's body into the empty shell chambers. The ammonite secreted gas into these shell chambers, enabling it to regulate the buoyancy of the shell. As the ammonite grew, it added newer and larger chambers toward the larger open end of the coil. They existed from 420 million years ago till the mass extinction at the end of the Cretaceous period, 65 million years ago.
