This listing represents a very rare piece of GI and Paratrooper personal field gear and a first for my listings. you have a maker-marked, GI Officer or NCO's Pocket Watch style Compass. The compass is complete and appears functional (I was not a boy scout). US is stamped on the cover. Waltham Watch Company made the compass. AAF aircrews also carried this style compass as an escape compass as part of their evasion kits. The compass is in near mint condition. T is a loop for a lanyard. The face opens easily when you press the button. Waltham is clearly marked to the face. It closes easily and snugly. The points of the compass and degrees are clear and legible. Compasses were critical for the Infantry and Paratroopers. Some outfits like the Airborne and 1st Cavalry Division saw to it that all of its troops were oriented with the use of a compass. In the infantry, often the platoon leader and the NCOs were versed in using a compass. The compass was a very important and necessary piece of field gear. I have included a photo from page 86 of GI, Government Issue, A Collector's Guide to the European Theatre as well as a photo from page 189 of Combat Flying Equipment.
