American Brilliant Period Ideal Cut Glass Company "Heavy cut" Sunbeam Pattern Celery You are bidding on a rare item in very nice condition from a remarkable cut glass collection... This beauty weighs in at an unbelievable 2 lbs 5 ounces! It measures 11 X 5 X 2 inches. A view from the top... The bottom view... We photographed this piece in the same position as the picture showing the Sunbeam Pattern in the Ideal Cut Glass Company catalog reproduced by the ACGA... The cane cut on the inside of a hobstar did not appear to be done by other companies. If you know of another company that cut it, I'd love to know who they were. 's an internal pattern detail from this amazing celery tray... The glass blank used is an incredible 1/2 inch thick! Normally you don't see anything this thick unless the piece is a punch bowl or very large piece. But Ideal Cut Glass Company had "light cut" and "heavy cut" patterns, and this is one of the heavy ones. 's an external pattern detail of the cane (two-cut octagon)... Another exterior view of some meticulous cross-hatching and a closeup of some fans... T are a few things wrong with this piece. All are easily polished out. are the worst flakes off the tops of two teeth contrast-enhanced to make them visible... The worst flake off a miter cut... And the worst pattern chips... T is some roughness on some of the other cuts. T are some light scratches, none of them particularly alarming. T is a moderate green glow in our black light... A little about the Ideal Cut Glass Company from the Canastota library... Ideal Cut Glass Company Originally located in Corning, NY, (1903) the Ideal Cut Glass Company relocated to Canastota in 1905. William Hitchcock, who had once operated a jewelry store in the village, purchased the enterprise from its Corning founders, Luman Conover, Fred Johnson, and Charles Rose. The plant opened shop in the former Marvin Drill Company buildings on October 15, with 35 glass cutting stations known as "frames". Glass pieces to be cut were known as "blanks" and included a variety of items, ranging from candlesticks and coffee sets to all sorts of stemware. These items usually arrived from Corning, Belgium, or Newark, Ohio, with the heavier pieces receiving heavier cuts ("heavy cut" glass) and the more delicate pieces receiving lighter cuts ("light cut" glass). The Star Flower Pattern, patented in 1913, remains the most popular of the 80 "heavy" designs put out by the company. This is commonly referred to as the "Diamond Poinsetta", and it was the most expensive pattern offered by the company. With the conversion from gas to electric lighting, the company also found brief success in the production of lamps. A variety of designs were sold, including a lamp-aquarium. Unfortunately, the Ideal Cut Glass Company was one of many industries unable to survive the Great Depression. The company filed for bankruptcy on March 14, 1933 and closed its doors by the end of that year. A little bit more from The Complete Cut and Engraved Glass of Corning by Farrer & Spillman ...
