It was during the American Brilliant Period (1870-1916) that the United States emerged as the producer of the finest cut glass in the world!! There were about 300 designer/cutters that are known today. Record Keeping was not the exacting process that it is today. We can reconstruct the history of perhaps 100, and of those, twenty to thirty are considered premiere cutters. The following are among the most well known: Hawkes, Libbey, Hoare, Dorflinger, Clark, Bergen, Meriden, Pairpoint (Mount Washington), Egginton, Straus, Blackmer. Many are inter-connected. For instance: Libbey and Pairpoint were connected by ownership at one point, pre-Period and early Period. Dorflinger, Hawkes, Hoare always conducted business together. Corning and Dorflinger on the East Coast supplied blanks to many cutters, while Libbey did the same from Toledo, Ohio, where it relocated after it emergence from its predecessor, The New England Cut Glass Company. ....Libbey and Pairpoint are the only two remaining companies.
