ABRAHAM LINCOLN Assassination 1865 Civil War Newspaper ABSOLUTELY GENUINE NEWSPAPER FROM 1865 NOT A REPRINT! 1ST REPORT OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN'S ASSASSINATION AT FORD'S THEATER THE CIRCULAR , Mount Tom, New York, Apr. 17, 1865. From the weekly newspaper published by the Oneida Community, the back page has one column headlines regarding the assassination of President Lincoln and attempted murder of Secretary of State Seward. Below this report is the beginning of a dispatch from Secretary of War Stanton that gives particulars about the murder and the getaway by the assassin. It also includes text about the attempted murder of Mr. Seward and his son by an unidentified, although possibly the same, assassin. The key statement in the dispatch says that "...It is not probable that the President will live throughout the night...". A footnote that follows this report gives the latest details about this tragedy & more including: "A dispatch states that Mr. Lincoln died at twenty-two after seven, Saturday morning...J.Wilkes Booth who shot the President, has been arrested in Maryland...Vice President Andrew Johnson, was inaugurated as President on Saturday." The front page has an editorial "The President's Death" offering analysis and conjecture about "...the rising curtain of the future...".
