Not for the faint hearted this button! A Japanese late Meiji period button in Shibayama technique circa 1900 with an assortment of creepy crawlies. The base disc is made of a semi-precious material carved and etched with the various bugs, pearl and horn were inlaid into position for the bodies then engraved with detail. We have clockwise from the top a spider, a ladybird, a beetle and a flea. The legs were filled with ink or dye in the manner of 'Scrimshaw' technique and the ladybird has colour added for the spots. The 1-3/16 ins diameter disc was set into a silver mount with a teardrop shaped shank on the reverse. The button which was no doubt destined for the western market was one of a set decorated with various other bugs that has remained in excellent order. I do not think it has ever been out of the presentation box as t is no damage to the various materials used and the silver mount is pristine. Shipping costs $10:00 this includes full insurance. Buyers from the U.K shipping costs £5:00 including insurance. I can of course combine shipping costs for multiple purchases. Thanks for looking and good luck if you decide to bid. |
