The French art glass maker Legras was a contemporary of Galle, Daum, Lalique, Delatte and others of the Art Nouveau era at the turn of the 20th Century in the 1850-1920 timeframe. The firm was established by Auguste Jean-Francois Legras in about 1864. By the end of the century it had specialized in acid-etched and enamelled cameo glass inspired by Emile Galle, France's leading maker of decorative glass in the fashionable Art Nouveau style. During the first decade of the 1900s Legras & Cie became a major exponent of the ecole de Nancy (School of Nancy) led by Galle. The firm produced a wide variety of commercial art-glass, both cameo and painted in enamels, but also made some large high-quality pieces for international exhibitions - only a few of these more elaborate examples have survived. This is one of those pieces. This monumental Legras lamp base rivals anything produced by any maker of any era. It is spectacular and near mint (it would only be mint if the shade were still intact). It is acid etched with five or six vibrant colors, ranging from greens and blues on the base to a pulsing salmon color. The metal work, while not attributed, was likely produced by the Edgar Brandt ironworks factory. This lamp is authentic, vintage French art glass, is acid etched with beautiful trees, lake and mountains, with grasses and other scences from nature. It is guaranteed vintage and original and can be seen in the book "Legras" by Verrier, on pages 74, 242 and 243. 3 Days Only No Reserve Auction.
